People for the Ethical treatment of Animals

Let me start by saying that I have a dog that I have in the past hunted with dogs, which by the way is their instinctive heritage, that I have lived in the country most of my life, and that PETA represents the absolute worst in our society. Added to that the FBI has declared PETA to be the worst terrorist organization in America. Sort of gives us cause to reflect on what terrorist is in not only objective terms but also in actions taken by terrorists. PETA is so active that the FBI has over 150 cases open and under investigation relating to PETA.

The primary problem with PETA is that they do not view animals in light of humane treatment, but instead have elevated animals above humans in the chain of life. Historically the roots of this organization go back to England and the foundation of the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). While the SPCA that was founded in the 1820’s, is a worthwhile and useful organization PETA is not either useful nor of any socially redeeming value. Reasonable and proper treatment of animals is a far cry from the arson of ski lodges, personal attacks on individuals, and the wanton destruction of anyone or anything opposing their mistaken goals. While I would cringe at someone mistreating an animal I am likewise disgusted by the actions of PETA against medical laboratories, sports complexes, scientific research organizations, and others. If these people are so determined to stop research why don’t they offer themselves up as guinea pigs? Like all do-gooders they want to impose their warped ideas on us, but not at their expense.

Just to demonstrate how warped these people are we can review a statement made in 1983 by Ingrid Newkirk who was at that time president of PETA, ”Six million Jews died in concentration camps, but six billion boiler chickens will die in slaughterhouses”. To equate the highest member of the evolutionary chain of life with that of one of the lowest, certainly one of the dumbest, and I know that for a fact we had chickens for years, is simply beyond the pale. The mantra of PETA is that we do not eat our children and so should not eat animals. The real question this brings up is, why if they really believe this are they not the most vocal opponents of abortion? Why are they not at the forefront of opposition against the murder of our children?  These people have a twisted distorted and confused ethical structure that is so far out of tilt as to make it criminal, just as the FBI has determined.

The issue is in fact not the treatment of animals at all, but the position of PETA that animals cannot be used in any scientific research for any reason. If it were not for testing on animals we would not have cures or treatment for scores of diseases. Examples would be the treatment of delirium, hypertension, diabetes, we could not do kidney transplants or heart surgery. Researchers who are presently working on AIDS and other disease treatments could not continue their research without the use of animals.

As the old saying goes you can judge a book by its cover. On this assumption we can judge PETA by the company they keep. One of PETA’s allies in their distorted war is ALF (Animal Liberation Front) and ELF (Earth Liberation Front) both of these violent organizations is on the FBI’s watch list. PETA has contributed over $ 40,000. for the defense of ALF member Rod Coronado who was convicted in 1995 for the 1992 bombing of the research lab of the University of Michigan, he is presently in federal prison. When in an interview of Ms. Newkirk John Stossel of ABC asked her about Colorado she stated, ”He’s a fine young man”. This in view of the fact that he claims to be responsible for scores of other arson attacks gives one an idea of where these screwballs are coming from. 

Now there are some among us who may think that all this is justified on some sort of grounds. To these I will recount the story of two PETA members arrested in North Carolina. Andrew Cook and Adria Hinkle who were charged with 31 felonies of animal cruelty and eight counts of illegally disposing of dead animals. A grand jury indicted them on 22 counts of cruelty to animals, and three counts of obtaining property under false pretences, and one count of trespassing. Police had caught them dumping the corpses of 18 dogs including 7 puppies, a cat and two kittens that they had killed into the dumpster behind the local Piggly Wiggly supermarket in Ahoskie County North Carolina. After referring to Hinkle as the “Mother Teresa of animals; she is a decent and kind person”” Newkirk PETA president disavowed the act and suspended the felons membership in PETA. This by the way is hardly news. PETA members have been involved nationally in what could be described as ritualistic murders of animals. 1991 SF, CA 18 rabbits and 14 roosters “rescued from a research facility the PETA members said they lacked the funds to feed them so they killed them. Never mind the fact that if they just let them go they would have easily survived in the urban environment.

The fact of the matter is that in the philosophy of PETA animals are better off dead than to be put to the immoral use of them by humans. This extends to farm animals pets, circus animals and those in zoos. Kruger National Park in South Africa is the largest game park in the world, about the size of Israel. They have a very serious problem in that they must cull scores of elephants every year due to overpopulation of elephants. PETA brought a lawsuit against the San Diego and Tampa zoos for wanting to bring elephants to their facilities from Kruger Park. Their argument in court was that it was better to cull (kill) the elephants than to allow them to be sent to a zoo.
